  4. Really interesting perspective! Milan is a city of bricks, though. Unlike the marbled grandeur of the rest of Italy's major cities. I was told that it's because there were no marble quarries nearby . . .

  5. Thanks to both of you. Most of Italy is build in various forms of limestone. Marble has always been extremely expensive and reserved for decoration in monuments. It's true that the famous marble quarries in Italy are further down south. It might also be that Milan is a fairly northern European town, in a way, far closer to Lyon, or Munich in spirit than to Rome. It was also long dominated by either Burgundy, France or the Habsburg.
